Spotted Pumpkins and a Spotted Toddler

Another post in our First on Friday series where we share a new experience from the week.

You saw it here first.

Before we even noticed it.

Yep, the toddler has chickenpox.

Luckily her fever appears to be behind us and she’s her usual happy self during the day, running in circles around the house. (Literally! We’re stir crazy over here.)

Her will power to not scratch amazes me. All it took was the doctor and pharmacist to both tell her not to scratch and she hasn’t. Mama may not have authority (“I’m scratching! HAHAHA!”) but those strangers sure do. They also told her to drink lots of water and she has (a constant battle in our house).

I may need the doctor to call and ask Miss Leyba to clean up her toys and, um, bring mama breakfast in bed… It’s worth a shot, right?!

Unfortunately being itchy doesn’t go well with sleeping soundly, so our nights have been rough. I keep reminding myself how thankful we feel that she has chickenpox now as a young child instead of as an adult, even if we have to hold, comfort and rock her most of the night. This too shall pass.

David and I both have had chickenpox twice (talk about crazy statistics!) so we’re able to provide her with the care she needs right now and not worry about ourselves: nearly constant contact and attention, lots of hugs, many books read and projects done… we’re been busy carving pumpkins, cutting paper dolls, baking, cooking and various household chores. (I’m trying to catch up around the house. HA!)

We’re also glossing over the fact that it’s Halloween this weekend, since she under quarantine. Thankfully she’s just two years old and has no idea. We hope she won’t realize she’s missing anything since she goes to bed before it all starts too.

After all, we can always pretend it’s Halloween next month when she’s healthy again, right?! I think hosting a toddler costume party may be in order.

Eyeglasses = Ultimate Accessory for a Two Year Old

Another post in our First on Friday series where we share a new activity from the week.

My daughter loved accompanying us to the eye doctors. She adored trying on the glasses. She enjoyed offering advice, “Go with purple, Mom!” She reveled in the idea of bringing glasses home for her.

Of course, she was all pensive for the photos. After all, trying on glasses is serious business. So is convincing mom of the necessity of procuring glasses for the toddler with perfect vision. Evidently.

“Mom, I need glasses too. I don’t see so well.”

“We’re bringing these home.”

“Oh, I think we should get me these.”

All direct quotes.

How can I break it to her that I hope she never needs glasses?! I may have to find her some play glasses… instead of the $100 ones she tried on and just had to have.

Pumpkin Patch Friday

Another post in our First on Friday series where we share a new activity from the week.

Despite the 90 degree weather here in wine country, we hear it’s actually fall in the rest of the United States. And fall means harvest activities! So we headed to a local pumpkin patch with our international play group. It was a hit!

By the way, Miss Leyba’s wearing a full-on hot pink outfit so that you can easily find her in the photos. ;)

Try getting a decent photo of ten toddlers. It’s a challenge, I tell you! (Anyone from the group have a better shot on their camera? I’ll post it!)

Camping Friday

Another post in our First on Friday series where we try something new!

David and I used to camp together.

We camped across the country:

David outside our old tent in Texas Canyon in 2003 on our way home to New Mexico from the east coast

We camped in our backyard for several nights after our wedding as a mini-honeymoon before the big honeymoon several months later:

With the wedding decorations still up in 2005 (ugh, pardon the blurry photo)

We camped in beautiful places:

At the Great Sand Dues in 2006

And then we had a kid. Since this event we’ve slept in a tent a total of one night IN OUR BACKYARD. LAST YEAR. TO TRY IT OUT. I know, pathetic. To say it was time to try it again was a bit of a understatement.

Yesterday we headed out to a State Park close to home for a one-night trip. Luckily when you live in Northern California you don’t need to go far to find someplace absolutely beautiful. Less than an hour away may not sound terribly exciting, but we’ve been feeling giddy over it and loved our trip.

Here’s how it went down:

All three of us enjoyed being in nature, doing something new together, and getting away from the fray.

Our getaway was so needed, so restful, such fun… and I am so looking forward to doing it again.

The best part though is that it’s Friday and we have the whole weekend ahead of us! Have a good one!

Gardening Friday

Today, being Friday, we did something new. After weeding, removing less-than-beloved plants, enriching and turning over the soil (all activities most certainly considered to be OLD), we planted bulbs.

Evidently Spritzer-Leyba’s are not ones for planting ordinary things like daffodils or crocuses. Miss Leyba and I had to choose the three feet tall giant purple allium.

They will look like this:

I know, they are gorgeous, gigantic and insane!

I desperately want them to transform the front garden and add a giant burst of color. I think this should do it! (Fingers crossed!)

I just can’t believe we have to wait six months to see if we planted them upside down… ;)
